Happy new year for under13 Blues
By Chris Bowler
After a long time......
After a long time since a ball had been kicked in anger, the boys were chomping at the bit to finally play a competitive game of football. So, to usher in the new year and the start of a new league was an away match against Corbridge.
We had a full squad to choose from including Noah and Oscar who would play a half each in goal. The starting line-up was Noah in goal with Martin, Daniel, Thomas and Jack in defence. Charlie Peacock, Harry, Euan and Ben in Midfield. Finally, with Blake and Lucas leading the attack. Ready to come on at a moment’s notice was Will, Charlie Ward and Sam.
There is always a slight worry when returning for the first match after Christmas; all those hours playing Xbox, eating sweets and late nights. After less than 5 minutes into the match the coaches soon realised that the players were definitely not suffering from any holiday hangovers.
From the very off, the Blues went on the offensive and it was Blake who got the ball rolling with a fine header from a cross by Harry after 3 minutes. Then Lucas was close to scoring but his shot fizzed wide. Blake got his double after just 8 minutes with Charlie P playing him in. Charlie P then went close to scoring himself after Lucas laid a ball into his path only for their keeper to make a good save. This was followed by Ben with a great shot after 18 minutes only for the keeper to palm away to safety. Ben continued to cause problems to the Corbridge defence down the left wing and managed to weave past several players before crossing the ball for Charlie P to slot home.
The defence had been little to do apart from a few routine saves by Noah and some mopping up by Jack, Daniel, Martin and Thomas. There was always the fear of the ball over the top which had been our Achilles heal in the past but the back four had the pace and experience to deal with it in this game. In fact, apart from one brilliant last gasp challenge from Thomas , the defence looked in control and were able to use the ball effectively and get the blues back into attacking positions quickly.
The second half started with Ben going close with flick from Blake then more excellent work from Charlie P who crossed for Lucas to deftly finish with a superb volley. Soon after, Man of the match Charlie P got his second goal of the match after latching on to a long ball played in by Thomas. Harry finished the proceedings with a fine individual goal when dribble into the penalty area and shooting from close range. Tynemouth continued to press for more and there followed a mad 10-minute spell with desperate defending from Corbridge as they blocked shot after shot. Sam hitting the post and close on numerous occasions, Euan shooting wide from distance and Charlie W with Ben going very close to scoring as well.
Good defending from the defence in slowing down any attacks that the opposition tried to muster and some cooly taken clearances from Oscar helped keep the blues on the offensive.
Overall a very pleasing first game to 2019. Let’s hope that the excellent team performances continue against the upcoming more difficult opponents.
